What I've Learnt

What i learnt:

1) I cannot get HTML working on this, regardless of the half-dozen working business website I've either built or managed the development for, including the Rich Business Centre Wollongong (which they haven't updated since i left) and the hardly updated Australian Punk Alliance.

2) either three things are going to happen:
a) I'm going to fail this subject for not giving it the time that it deserved.
b) I'm going to pass and get through with a piece of skin missing from myself (being that close of a shave)
c) Someone is going to read the above reason and ban me from university if they give it some real thought.

But in all seriousness i did learn bit from this subject, including how to use iweb (though in all honestly i couldn't see myself using it extensively), how to at the very least, read HTML pages and how to use RSS feeds.

This subject also introduced me to websites such as flikr, which i have not used extensively, but this will change in the near future as i do more artworks. I also love the idea of del.ic.ious, but alas i can only see myself using that on a 'when i want to use it' rather than 'when i have to use it'.

All-in-all MPI104 has shown me new programs, just my own inherent laziness had led me to a possible failure of the subject. i did like what i learnt, and i will use all these web programs in my future, but i feel that i didn't do enough in this subject. i hope I'm wrong for the sake of my HECS bill...

Last Second - Week 9: Counters and RSS

Counters

Counters are bit of programming script that show the user of a how many visitors there have been to a particular web page. They are usually located on the bottom of a page for aesthetic purposes (it isn't an important piece of information for many users).

Counters are used mainly for marketing purposes, they show the user and web developer exactly how popular a website is, and use this information when deciding on any expansions of websites or web-based business. They also serve as a sales tool for advertisers to sell themselves on certain websites.

Web Analysis Tools

There are various types of web analysis tools that allow the webmaster to not only view how many people have come to his/her particular website, but to be as specific as to what time of the day or week they have visited the website, to what country the web user is checking in from.

All of these tools rely of a counter (whether seen or otherwise) and record the where and when (country and time of browse) and record these details. AWStats is by far the most popular tool and is provided free with many ISP's.

RSS: Really Simple Syndication. RSS is a family of web feed formats used to frequently publish updated works – Such as Blog Entries...” (www.wikipedia.org, 2010). RSS feeds basically send you an email whenever certain websites and programs (such as I tunes, various websites) update their material. It is brilliant for those people who want their information to come to them on a regular basis.

As a University student whose main hobbies include sleeping in and playing bass guitar, I have plenty of time, so web surfing is still high on the list of things I can do.

Google Reader:

Google reader is effectively an unfiltered RSS feed, showing all new and random things that are all over the internet (excluding adult material, from what I've noticed).

Last Second - Week 8: FTP

File Transfer Protocol is a transfer system (or protocol, oddly enough) that allows the simple use of files to be transferred across the internet (via a client/server upload relationship) in order to set up WebPages, upload large documents that cannot be transferred over email and give a reasonable secure set up for storing items online.

Below is a list of Pros and Cons for FTP

According the www.beatificfaith.com/projects (2007) there are good reasons for, and against the use of a FTP system for uploading documents. These are

PROS:
• Quick and Easy to Use: FTP systems are easy to use and set up for most people. Simply download a program (such as FileZilla or Fetch) and look through various fields that you want to upload.
• Various Programs: There are lots of programs (many of which are free to download) that will allow you to use a FTP server. However, the mostly widely used are FileZilla and Fetch for Mac based products.
• Online Help: As the protocol has been in use for over 25 years, there is a lot of information on the web to coax you through the entire process of using FTP.

CONS:
• Security Issues: All passwords are sent over to the FTP system using plain text, making it very easy for online criminals to gather information about your files, and possible even place viruses on your server.
• Filter Issues: It is hard to keep files out of your FTP server for this very same reason. Spammers love FTP.

Minimilising Risks inherent to FTP:

The IBM Public Library (http://publib.boulder.ibm.com, 2005) states many ways to lower risks when using FTP systems. These include:
• Making FTP controls more restrictive
• Write exit programs for FTP, so that when files are transferred they are locked, and are not able to be modified.
• To minimilise ‘denial of service’ attacks (where a hacker attempts to log into your account so many times that it locks the system), you can also use various FTP server exit programs.
• Allowing only one person to access the FTP site.
• Use Secure Sockets Layers to lock and encrypt transferred files.

Last Minute: Week 7 - Templates + CSS

Advantages of using CSS:

Cascading Style Sheets is extremely useful in building websites, as it gives the user a What You See Is What You Get Layout, effectively allowing a person to build and change anything on their respective WebPages without having to change any details in their site.

Through CSS users can change virtually anything in their website from font, background, background pictures, link colours and link behaviours just to name a few.

Templates:

Virtually everything can be changed on a template. Templates are given in order to ensure that the user has a foundation of a website is there. They usually have structure of a header, link placements (most popularly on the upper left side or in the header's masthead. Templates can be downloaded for a small cost, but it is just as easy to make your own in a program such as Dreamweaver.

Templates are vital in order to create conformity among websites individual pages. Without a proper set-up to work from in a template.

What cannot be changed in templates?

General size of WebPages. Although many templates will physically show extra information hat is shown on the page, templates usually have to stretch the pages, thus taking away from the general look of the website itself.

General Layout of WebPages cannot be changed with template options: compared to a custom built template, which can change as you need (and as a result, is much more expensive) a template is quite concrete in how the website will look, thus us it rather hard to change the look and feel of a website if you are using it from a template.

In cases where you do not like the template you have chosen, it is usually best to start over again with a new template.

APA - getting fixed up

for those people who may read this and be into punk,

I run a website called the Australian Punk Alliance (www.australianpunkalliance.com.au). It's pretty well been dead since october '09 due to uni, work and most importantly - Lazyness.

Blogging: Just like a priviate diary, SCREAMING for attention

wow, i'm actually on fire here.

This is the pesimest in me... deal with it.

could be that my assessment is here, could also be that the site is up and i may as well write something and see if it gets seen/cared about... oh Jonathan Frakes how you were so very very wrong.

I have a few issues with the old blogs, hence why i haven't really used them, these problems being:

1) the whole "you can communicate with the entire world" notion. Although physically this is true, anyone can read your post. they can draw influence from it, they can ridicule it, they can praise it, hell, they can live by it.

... but no one will. having a place to put your works, where the works of other people turn it into nothing more than graffiti on a toilet wall -and thats only if it's sucessful.

I love the fact that i can say my word, equally as much as i like hearing what my fellow man has to say - but 6 billion stories is a lot to get through, and lets face it, most of the stories (including many of mine) are boring or homogonious.

my thoughts on the blog... please let me be wrong.

Band Forming

Since about mid march i've tried to get a band started in wagga. More specifically a punk-rock/Punk Band, as i've noticed that Wagga has metal (and pretty fucking good metal at that!!!!) and alternative bands (hit and miss with these guys, DuckPuppy is pretty decent, others are just there.)

So i've decided to get off my arse and get something going for punks who might actually do something besides covers in a garage.

I'm a bass player, and i've found 3 guitarists who are keen.

THe first guy, Patrick, One is a metal/thrash dude, who will be pretty decent, fast player and i think he'll be pretty sweet and will help me complete my master plan.

The other dude, Issac, is a 17 year old kid. he's been away, returning next week. I'm a little unsure as he's wanting to sing and play and to be honest the final guitarist has said that he'll only be singing... so i'll have to make sure that this guy knows he'll be mainly playing.
That said, if the kids half as good as he is keen to play, it'll work out just fine.

The thrid guy, Luke, Is actually the trumpet player in a local Ska Band, Just Like Josiah. He approached me one night (i live with some of the players from JLJ and Duckpuppy) and blantly said that he wanted in... The guy is a man after my own heart, so i told him that he'll have a spot - luckily i've been told he's an awesome singer and guitarist - he's like the Australian El Hefe'.

And thats it as far as the "band" is concerned at the moment... we still need to find a drummer as i'm on the 4 string, but thankfully people know people, so it may be filled before too long - I HOPE.

Fish Mutant Zombie appocolypse caused by Google Docs.

This seems like an online word processor. honestly, as someone who ALREADY has a word processor on his computer, this isn't exactly life-changing.

With that said, it is a great thing that i could use, say in another dimension - provided that the only difference in this dimension is that we don't have a word processor, and not in a dimension where we are all fish mutant zombies, though that would be cool if i was the only normal person there, i would kick some arse and go fishing at the same time... i think i may be onto something here.

Back to the point-at-hand; this is great for those people who have access to the Internet, but no actual word processing or office suite type of software on their computers... well done google.

Now, back to the fish mutant zombies in dimension stupid. i'm thinking they would inhabit the ocean and other water ways, as they are fish mutants, and not just mutant fish. So in theory we should be right on land, right? WRONG!

Us land dwellers should be safe, unless they bite us then we become mutants on land, in which case do we also mutate into fish type things? If that's the case then we should also return to the water.

Soon enough the water will become overpopulated, and the normal people will be without fish, creating famine, disease and wars between fish-eating nations. Australia should be somewhat safe as we have such high lamb stocks. But with that said, Australians are usually the first guys to die in any movie...

Famine is the least of our worries, with the mutant fish zombies wanting more human officers, they will infect all types of water over time, effectively boning the human population. My advice, move to Tasmania or south Australia - maybe the mutant fish zombies only like "fresh" blood... in which case these two states, known for their interbreeding capabilities should be safe.

By safe, we should live for a generation or two before the insanity that comes with giving your sister special hugs takes over... by that time the fish mutant zombies may have even set up a happy and healthy water society, who knows?
And the morals of the story are:

1) I've used google docs, and it works very similar to any other word processor, kudos to google, but only if i can save it as a document.
2) The discovery of the dimension "Stupid".
3) Humankind will be eradicated by the mutant fish zombies in this dimension
4) I may have also found a way that one can interact sensually with ones family...
4b) I may or may not be a pretty messed up individual.

hello,

This is about Flickr... After being on there for about half an hour i've joined two groups, metal/punk/blah/blah/blah, which i'm probably not going to send too many things too, and another punk-related site "We are Punk", which seems like things that i'll be adding on to.

I also uploaded a few photos from my vanawatu trip, and a comic strip from the website www.explosm.net.

All-in-all it is a wonderful site, seems easy to use and to work around. with that, the site is rather cluttered and there seems to be a little bit of information overload - but that what you get when you tell millions of people just to go nuts.
